The Byerly Foundation was created after the sale of the Byerly Hospital to continue to serve the Hartsville community. Since the sale, a significant number of community leaders have served on The Byerly Foundation Board.
Jerome Reyes: Board Chair since 2017: Jerome resides in Hartsville with his wife and their three children, and is the Pulse Coordinator with the S. C. Governor’s School for Science, Mathematics and Technology. Dr. Reyes joins PULSE as a former associate professor of Mathematics at Norfolk State University, where he taught courses from freshman-level Algebra to senior-level Design of Experiments. Dr. Reyes received his first bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Morehouse College and his second in industrial engineering from Georgia Tech. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a master’s and Ph.D. in operations research. For five years, he was also involved in four different National Science Foundation funded grants that focused on the level of K-12 education being offered in Virginia. (Term began in 2013)
Bob Brown: Treasurer: Bob is the CEO of Integrated Systems, Inc. He also serves as a Board Member on the GSSM Foundation, as Chairman of the Board for the Duke Energy Center for Innovation, and as a Board Member of the Heritage Community Bank. (Term began in 2014)
Nancy McGee: Secretary: Nancy is a past president and current member of the Board of Directors of Kiwanis Club of Hartsville. Nancy serves as vice chair of The Community Foundation for a Better Hartsville, Chairs the City of Hartsville Parks Committee and is a member of the Main Street Hartsville Advisory Committee. She was president of the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce for 17 years prior to joining her husband, Bobby, at McGee Financial Group. (Term began in 2013)
Rainey Knight: Rainey is an educational consultant and the former Superintendent of the Darlington County School District. She resides in Hartsville and has one adult son. (Term began in 2014)
Bill Perry: Bill is the lead pastor at the Hartsville Community Fellowship Church. He is also a leadership consultant. He and his wife, Heather, live in Hartsville and have two children in college. (Term began in 2014)
Lex West: Lex is an owner and President of West Oil Company. He and his wife Sherry have two boys, Croxton, 15 and Joshua, 13. He is a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and a board member of the Darlington County Education Foundation. He is a long term board member of the YMCA of the Upper Pee Dee and Chairman of their Endowment Committee. (Term began in 2015)
Roger Schrum: Roger has more than 30 years of business management experience for five Fortune 500 energy and manufacturing companies. He currently is Vice President of Investor Relations and Corporate Affairs for Sonoco Products Company (NYSE: SON). In this position, he is responsible for this $5 billion-revenue global packaging company’s investor relations, marketing and brand communications, digital communications, executive communications, sustainability, community relations and public affairs. He is a member of Sonoco’s Executive and Management committees and serves as the Chair of the Company’s Sustainability Council and the Sonoco Foundation, the Company’s philanthropic arm. He is the Company’s global spokesperson and reports to the President and Chief Executive Officer. In 2016, he was appointed by Governor Nikki Haley to serve on the South Carolina Technical System Board of Directors. He is a past Chairman of South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance and serves on the Board of Directors. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce; Central Carolina Community Foundation; the South Carolina AgriBusiness Alliance; North East Strategic Alliance; the YMCA of the Upper Pee Dee and the board of trustees for the South Carolina Business and Industry Education Committee. He twice served as Chairman of the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce and the Darlington County Economic Development Partnership; and served on the advisory board for MUSC’s Medical Associates. Mr. Schrum resides in Hartsville, South Carolina, with his wife, Connie. They have four grown children and five grandchildren. (Term began in 2016)
Linda Weatherford: Linda is President/CEO of SPC Credit Union in Hartsville, SC, a position she assumed on January 1, 2016. She has also served as CEO of Health Facilities Federal Credit Union in Florence from 1994 – 2004, and worked with Dixie’s Federal Credit Union in Darlington from 1987 – 1994. She is currently a member of the Carolinas Credit Union League Board of Directors, where she serves as Chairman, and also immediate past chair of the SC Governmental Affairs Committee. Linda is an active community volunteer, having served on the Pee Dee Harvest Hope Food Bank Advisory Board, an active participant of SPC’s Care2Share Employee giving campaign, which supports local non-profits including The United Way, Harvest Hope Food Bank, American Cancer Society and more. She is married to Mike Weatherford, and the mother of two boys, Robbie and Jordan. She is a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Darlington, SC, where she is actively involved in music, discipleship and mission ministries. (Filling an unexpired term since 2015)
Patrick Youngblood: Patrick works in the Treasury Department at Sonoco Products Company. (Term began in 2017)
Susan Daniels Henderson: Susan is the Chief Academic Officer and Dean of Faculty at Coker. She received her B.A. in Religion from Davidson College, her K-8 teaching credentials from Coker College, and her M.Ed. in Reading Instruction and Ph.D. in Language and Literacy Education from Georgia State University. She recently ended six years of service on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the South Carolina’s Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA). She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges of Teacher Education (AILACTE) and the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE). She and her husband Kyle live in Hartsville with their two children. (Term began in 2017)
Christopher Shirley: Christopher Shirley grew up in the Historic Butler District area of Hartsville SC, and developed a love for people and social change. With over 15 years of mortgage banking experience, he has been employed by companies such as Washington Mutual, JP Morgan Chase Bank, and First Citizens. He is currently with the South Carolina State Credit Union. While he is an accomplished mortgage banker, his approach to community development can be called “non-traditional” as he is primarily self-taught. Mr. Shirley views community development from what he believes makes sense from an empirically-based approach. He is on numerous boards, Vice Chairman of Historical Butler District, board member for Community for a Better Hartsville, Habitat for Humanity, Cypress Adventures, and the Planning Commission. He believes that every person has the ability to teach and deserves to express ways that life has affected them. He also loves how art and music can inspire change. Christopher’s favorite quote is “We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them.” – Albert Einstein (Term began in 2017)
